The Transportation Planning Co-op will work with a dynamic team of transportation planning / engineering professionals on a variety of transportation planning projects including transit planning projects, transportation master plans, municipal environmental assessments, and travel demand modelling studies.

Perform assignments under the direct supervision of Architects, Project Managers and other professionals
Participate in the architectural design process, and develop alternative solutions and presentation graphics used to communicate concepts to clients or for agency approval
Follow through on design development drawings and models, and collaborate with production staff for technical details and completion of construction drawings

HDR is currently seeking applications for a four-month placement at our downtown Toronto office. In this role, the successful candidate will work on a large variety of projects associated with engineering building systems for variety of commercial projects. The student will work concurrently on multiple projects that are in various stages of design and construction. This diverse array of projects and tasks will provide the student with excellent opportunities to learn about all aspects of the building engineering industry.
HDR will also ensure that the successful candidate is well supported and put in a position to succeed. They will be working as an important member of our mechanical team, who will provide them with mentorship to support their growth and development. Port Engineer Internship/Co-Op
The Ports Intern/Co-Op will work as a member of the Waterfront Infrastructure design team on projects serving clients in the New England area.
HDR is seeking a qualified individual to join a group of experts in the Ports and Maritime group as a Port Engineer Intern/Co-Op. This individual will participate with teams to support the design of small to large projects (construction values typically from $500K to $100M) and primary focus will be on geotechnical, structural and general civil design elements of projects. Primary responsibility will involve performing design tasks on projects ranging from limited complexity and scope to those including moderately complex features. Efforts will be guided by senior and mid-level engineers, CAD personnel and management.
Duties will include:
· Performing design tasks, quantity calculations and collection of data to assist with development of plans, details and technical specifications
· Construction field observations to verify general conformance with contract documents and to monitor and report on status of construction completion
· Coordination with other disciplines (Coastal, Civil, Structural, etc.) engineers and team members to gather and assess data
· Production of documents (studies/reports, designs, details, sketches, opinions of costs)
· Presentation of findings through verbal, written and graphical presentations
Typical projects include the design of deep-water bulkhead walls (anchored, combi-wall, cantilevered, etc.), reinforced concrete jetty platforms, berthing structures including fender design, steel hose towers or frames, analyses of ship mooring structures, line tensioning calculations, elevated pedestrian walkways and access systems, geometrical studies of ship/equipment operational envelopes, dredging plans, etc.
The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to learn new concepts and to participate in a team environment to solve simple to complex problems. Prior internship history and/or design experience along with construction observation or administration experience and/or evidence of other mechanical aptitude is a plus. Good to excellent oral and written communications skills will be required for interaction between peers, management and other design and production staff. Must be able to clearly demonstrate understanding of, or participation with, basic engineering concepts.
Candidates will be exposed to different contracting methodologies, construction means and methods, assist with volume calculations and material quantity estimates and participate in development of engineering scopes of works and fee estimates, in collaboration with a team of experienced ports and maritime staff.

In the role of GIS Intern, we'll count on you to:
Conduct spatial analyses and prepare maps using ArcGIS
Perform data input and editing of spatial and tabular data using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
Support field data collection using mobile GIS/GPS equipment
Follow documented technical procedures

Prefer 2 years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry Required Qualifications
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate environmental science, biology, environmental Engineering or related program
Attention to detail
Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills

The Transportation Planning Co-op will work with a dynamic team of transportation planning / engineering professionals on a variety of transportation planning projects including transit planning projects, transportation master plans, municipal environmental assessments, and travel demand modelling studies.
In the role of Transportation Planning Co-op, we'll count on you to:
Offer real-world experience on exciting projects
Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals programs
Apply standard engineering techniques and procedures
Perform assignments under the direct supervision of a professional or Project Manager
Data analysis
Travel demand forecasting
GIS mapping
Transportation policy research
Intersection capacity analysis
Transit planning and design
Active transportation planning and analysis
Report writing
Data collection, site visits
Public consultation
Perform other duties as needed Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ArcGIS.
Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, or related field. Required Qualifications
