Detailed Job Description
Non-tenure track lecturer in Sociology and Anthropology
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Liberal Arts at the Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for a Lecturer position beginning January 2025. Prospective candidates are expected to have earned a Ph.D. in sociology or in anthropology and demonstrated the ability to teach a variety of courses in one of these two disciplines. The expectations for this lecturer position center on teaching and service responsibilities. The successful applicant will be expected to offer multiple sections of either Foundations of Sociology or Cultural Anthropology and other courses based upon departmental need. The lecturer's service expectations are met by assuming the role and performing the responsibilities of the undergraduate director for the B.S. program in sociology and anthropology. The undergraduate program director role will involve supporting students in the department including recruitment, retention, success, involvement and career preparation; and supporting and developing the B.S. degree program through reviewing and updating curriculum and overseeing the annual program assessment process.
Responsibilities include:* Teaching - 6 course sections per academic year, courses to be determined based on departmental need. Single course sections may be combined into larger offerings. (The standard teaching load for this position is 8 courses per year. If the program director duties are no longer assigned for this role, the teaching load would revert to the typical 8 courses per year.)
The following undergraduate program director service responsibilities are central:* Student Recruitment, Retention, and Success - participate in open houses and other recruitment events; collaborate to develop recruitment materials, serve as a liaison for prospective students and their families; coordinate and plan events, including orientation; participate in the review of academic actions; facilitate student participation in scholarly events.
In line with these responsibilities, close communication with the department chair and collaboration with department faculty members are crucial.
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is a vibrant, interdisciplinary department, whose faculty members share a strong commitment to global justice, human rights, and sustainable futures. This commitment builds on expanding engaged scholarship and coursework in the following three areas: social inequalities, cultural diversity, and globalization. While the investigative focus of each faculty member is distinct and draws on a different body of research or theory, the department's inquiries into inequality, diversity, and globalization intersect and crosscut disciplinary boundaries.
We are seeking an individual who has the ability and interest in contributing to a community committed to student-centeredness; professional development and scholarship; integrity and ethics; respect, diversity and pluralism; innovation and flexibility; and teamwork and collaboration. Select to view links to RIT's core values, honor code, and statement of diversity.
